In plain words
33.9% of seats
What it is. This measure counts the share of seats in the national parliament held by women, using Inter-Parliamentary Union data carried by the World Bank. Only the lower or single house is covered, so any upper chamber falls outside it. It records who holds a seat. It says nothing about committee chairs, ministerial posts or how much influence those members have over legislation.
Higher is better. A higher share means more women take part in making laws and the chamber looks more like the population it serves, which is why a rise counts as progress. Cameroon stood at 33.9% of seats in January 2025, the same as a year earlier. Since 2016 the share has ranged from 31.1% of seats in 2016 to 33.9% of seats in 2020. The latest figure therefore sits at the top of that range, level with the 2020 peak.
Why it matters. With 33.9% of seats, women hold a sizeable minority of the chamber in Cameroon. They can raise issues such as family law, land rights and health spending in debate and in committee. The share has stayed flat for a year, and it changes only when the make-up of the chamber changes, so the figure to check next is the one following the next parliamentary election.
