In plain words

18.3% of seats

What it is. This measure counts the share of seats held by women in the national parliament, using the lower house or the only house. The Inter-Parliamentary Union collects the figures and the World Bank republishes them. It is a snapshot of who holds seats at a given date, so it leaves out upper chambers and says nothing about which committees or leadership posts women hold.

Higher is better. More women in parliament means a larger share of the population has a direct voice in writing laws and approving budgets, which is why a higher figure is better. The latest figure is 18.3% of seats in January 2025, the same as the 18.3% of seats a year earlier. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 6.3% of seats in 2020 to a high of 18.3% of seats in 2024. The current level therefore sits at the top of its range for that period.

Why it matters. At 18.3% of seats, women are a clear minority in the chamber that passes Burkina Faso's laws and budgets. Issues such as family law and public spending on health and schools are mostly decided by men. The rise from the 2020 low means women's voices carry more weight in debate than they did then. The figure did not move between 2024 and 2025.
