In plain words

77.4% of population

What it is. This measure counts individuals who use the internet, from any device and any location, and expresses them as a share of the whole population. Because it counts people, someone with two SIM cards or several devices is counted once. It records whether a person goes online, so it says nothing about connection speed, reliability, cost or how often people use the internet.

Higher is better. A higher share is good because more people can reach online public services, banking, learning materials and job listings. The latest figure is 77.4% of population in 2024, up from 76.2% a year earlier, a gain of 1.2 percentage points. Since 2015 the range runs from a low of 38.2% of population in 2015 to a high of 77.4% of population in 2024. The latest reading therefore sits at the top of its range for the period, roughly double the level of 2015.

Why it matters. In Algeria, about 77 per cent of people being online means most households can use digital payments, government portals, online shopping and remote work. Firms can sell to a much larger connected customer base than a decade ago. The people outside that share depend on offline channels for these services, so the state still needs to keep counters and paper procedures running alongside its digital offer.
