In plain words
28.3% of population
What it is. Internet users counts people who used the internet in a recent period, wherever and on whatever device, and divides them by the whole population. National figures usually come from household surveys or are estimated from operator subscription data, so they follow people who go online and not the number of connections or SIM cards. Children and adults are both in the denominator, and the measure says nothing about speed, cost or how often people connect.
Higher is better. A higher share means more people can reach information, services, markets and jobs that now depend on a connection, so a rise is good. In Burkina Faso the latest figure is 28.3% of population for 2024, up from 25.4% of population a year earlier, a gain of 2.9 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has ranged from 6.5% of population at the start to 28.3% of population in 2024, so the latest reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. At 28.3% of population, a little over a quarter of Burkinabè are online, so most households still cannot use digital banking, online school material or remote government services. Firms selling through mobile or web channels reach a minority of customers, and the state has to keep paper and in-person routes for most citizens. The 2024 figure is the one to check against the next annual update to see whether the recent pace of gain holds.
