In plain words
57.5% of population
What it is. This measure gives the share of all residents in Botswana who use the internet, with children and older people counted in the total. Each person counts once, however many devices or SIM cards they have. Speed, price and quality of connection fall outside the measure, so two countries with the same share can offer very different online experiences.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because more people can reach online services, information and markets. The latest figure is 57.5% of population in January 2024. Since 2014 the series has ranged from a low of 36.7% of population in January 2014 to a high of 57.9% in January 2022. The latest reading therefore sits close to the top of its range and just under the 2022 peak.
Why it matters. A little over half of Botswana's residents are online, so many households can use banking apps, mobile payments, online schooling and government services. Firms can reach a customer base that is mostly connected, though a large minority of the population remains offline. The state can put more services online, but it needs to keep other channels open for those who still lack access.
