In plain words
34% of population
What it is. This measure counts the share of people in Benin who used the internet, whether on a phone, computer or other device. It is usually built from household and individual surveys, sometimes combined with operator data, and it is expressed against the whole population, children included. Because it counts use rather than subscriptions, it can capture people who borrow a phone or connect at a shared access point, but it says nothing about speed, cost or how often someone goes online.
Higher is better. More people online means wider access to information, services, markets and jobs, so a higher share is better. The latest figure, for 2024, is 34% of population, up from 32.4% of population a year earlier, a gain of 1.6 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has ranged from 11.3% of population at the start of the window to 34% of population in 2024. The latest reading is therefore the highest in that span.
Why it matters. About a third of people in Benin now use the internet, so most households still have no regular connection. Firms that sell or advertise online reach a minority of customers, and public services delivered through websites or apps reach fewer people than the same services at a counter. The rise since 2015 means the online population has roughly tripled in that time, which widens the market for mobile payments and digital government services.
