What it is. Internet users counts the share of people in Burundi who used the internet, whether on a phone, a computer or a shared connection. Figures usually come from national household surveys or are estimated from operator data, so a person who goes online occasionally counts the same as a daily user. The measure says nothing about speed, cost or what people do online.
Higher is better. A higher share means more people can reach information, services, and markets online, so a rising figure is good news for this measure. The latest figure, for 2024, is 8.6% of population, up from 7.2% of population a year earlier, a gain of 1.4 percentage points. It is also the highest level since 2015, when it stood at 2% of population, the lowest in that span.
Why it matters. At 8.6% of population, most Burundians are still offline, so banking, government forms, school material and job listings reach only a small minority through the internet. Firms that sell online or take digital payments have a narrow customer base. The state cannot yet count on online channels to deliver public services to the wider population.
