What it is. This measure counts individuals who use the internet and expresses them as a share of the whole population. It covers anyone online, whatever device or connection they use. It leaves out connection speed, cost and how often people go online, so a person with occasional access counts the same as a daily user.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because more people can reach online services, information, education and work. The latest figure is 74.6% of population in 2024, up from 74% a year earlier, a rise of 0.64 percentage points. Since 2015 the lowest figure was 37.8% of population in 2015. The 2024 figure is also the highest in that window, so Egypt sits at the top of its own range.
Why it matters. For Egyptian households, a share of 74.6% of population means most people can use online banking, government services, messaging and remote work. Firms can reach a large online customer base through digital sales and payments. The remaining people offline are the group that public digital services still have to reach by other channels.
