In plain words
49.5% of population
What it is. This measure counts individuals who use the internet, from any device and in any place, as a share of the whole population. Children and older people sit in the denominator, so the figure describes the country's population as a whole and not only its adults or its subscribers. Speed, cost and how often people go online are outside what it records.
Higher is better. Higher is better because every additional person online can reach information, digital payments, education and markets that are harder to access offline. The latest figure is 49.5% of population in 2024, up from 48.7% a year earlier, a gain of 0.77 percentage points. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of 17.6% of population in 2015 to its highest figure, 49.5% of population, in 2024. The latest reading therefore sits at the top of its range for the period.
Why it matters. With 49.5% of population online, services delivered over the internet, such as mobile payments, online learning and government information, can reach a large share of Gambian households. Firms selling or advertising online can reach a wider customer base than a decade ago. The remaining share of the population still depends on in-person channels for these services.
