In plain words
29.8% of population
What it is. This measure counts the share of people in Guinea-Bissau who used the internet, on any device and from any place, within a recent period, usually the previous three months. National statistics offices and the International Telecommunication Union build it mainly from household surveys, with operator subscription data used to fill gaps. It covers use by individuals, so a shared phone counts for each person who goes online on it. It leaves out how fast or reliable the connection is and how often people use it.
Higher is better. A higher share means more people can reach information, services, jobs and markets online, so a rising figure is good news for this measure. The latest figure is 29.8% of population in 2024, up from 28.7% a year earlier, a gain of 1.1 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has risen from 6.1% of population, and the 2024 reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. At 29.8% of population, roughly three in ten people in Guinea-Bissau are online, so most households still rely on offline channels for news, banking and public services. Firms and government offices that move services online reach a minority of the population. Each further year of growth widens the pool of customers, students and workers who can use digital tools.
