In plain words
35% of population
What it is. This measure counts the share of people in Kenya who use the internet, from any device and in any place. It usually comes from household or national surveys that ask whether a person has used the internet within a recent period, often the last three months. Because it counts people and not subscriptions, one person with several SIM cards counts once, and a shared phone can serve several users. It says nothing about speed, cost or how often people go online.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because more people can reach online services, information, jobs and payments. The latest figure is 35% of population in 2024, up from 32.1% of population a year earlier, a rise of 2.9 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has ranged from a low of 16.6% of population to a high of 35% of population, so the latest reading is the top of its range over that span. No peer ranking is available for this series.
Why it matters. At 35% of population, roughly one Kenyan in three is online, which leaves most people outside services that increasingly run on the internet. Households without access depend on cash, agents or branch visits for services that others handle on a phone. Firms and the state reach a growing but still limited online audience when they sell goods, offer public services or collect payments digitally.
