In plain words
19% of population
What it is. Internet users counts the share of a country's people who use the internet, whatever device or network they use. Each person counts once, so someone with several SIM cards or accounts adds one to the tally. Children and older people are in the denominator along with working-age adults. Speed, price and quality of connection sit outside the measure.
Higher is better. More people online means wider access to information, public services, learning and markets, so a higher share is better. Malawi's latest figure is 19% of population in 2024, up from 18% of population a year earlier, a rise of 0.97 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has climbed from a low of 6% of population in January 2015 to this 2024 high of 19% of population. The latest reading is therefore the highest in its range.
Why it matters. With 19% of population online, most Malawians remain outside the internet. Households there have limited reach to online banking, job listings, school material and price information. Firms selling online can reach only a small share of customers, and the state can offer digital services to only a minority of citizens. The next annual reading will show whether the rise of 0.97 percentage points continues.
