In plain words
15.6% of population
What it is. This measure counts the people who use the internet and divides them by the whole population, so children and older people sit in the denominator. It covers use on any device and for any purpose. It leaves out connection quality and how often people go online.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each additional person online can reach information, services, jobs and markets that are otherwise distant. The latest figure, 15.6% of population in January 2024, is up from 13% of population a year earlier, a gain of 2.6 percentage points. Since 2015 the lowest level was 2.5% of population, and the 2024 figure is the highest in that span. Over those years the share has climbed to its peak.
Why it matters. At 15.6% of population, most people in Niger are still offline, so online banking, mobile services and remote learning reach a minority of households. Firms selling over the internet find a small domestic market of connected customers. Government services delivered digitally reach only a limited share of citizens.
