What it is. This measure counts individuals who use the internet as a share of everyone living in the country, children and older people included. It follows people rather than subscriptions or devices, so a person with a phone and a laptop counts once. Connection speed, cost and what people do online sit outside it.
Higher is better. More people online means wider access to banking, public services, schooling and jobs, so a higher share is better. The latest figure is 87.8% of population in 2024, up from 86% of population a year earlier, a rise of 1.8 percentage points. Since 2015 the low was 54.3% of population in 2015, and the 2024 reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. In Seychelles most residents can now be reached online, which lets households use banking, bill payment and government services from home. Firms can sell and advertise to nearly the whole market through digital channels, and the state can move forms and payments online. The residents still offline depend on counters and paper routes, so those services need to stay available to them.
