What it is. This measure counts the share of people in Sierra Leone who use the internet, whether on a phone, a computer or a shared connection. Estimates usually come from household surveys and from operator and regulator data. It records whether a person goes online, and says nothing about speed, cost or how often they connect.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because more people can reach information, services, jobs and markets online. The latest figure is 25.1% of population for 2024, up from 23.7% of population a year earlier, a rise of 1.4 percentage points. Since 2015 the series has climbed from a low of 6.3% of population, and the 2024 reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. At 25.1% of population, roughly one person in four in Sierra Leone is online, so most households still depend on offline channels for news, payments and public services. Firms and government offices that move services online reach only a minority of the population. Growth over the past decade shows the audience is widening, which gives mobile money, online learning and digital public services a larger base each year.
