What it is. This measure counts the share of all people in Somalia who use the internet, so children and older people sit in the denominator along with working-age adults. A person counts as a user whatever the device or place of access. The figure leaves out the quality of the connection, such as speed, price and how often people go online.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because more people online can reach information, services, payments and customers. The latest figure is 27.9% of population for 2024, up from 26.1% a year earlier, a rise of 1.8 percentage points. Since 2013 the series has climbed from a low of 1.5% of population in 2013. The 2024 reading is also the highest in that span.
Why it matters. For Somali households, a share of 28 in every hundred means most people are still offline, and online services reach only a minority. Firms selling or advertising online address a market that is growing but still small. For the state, any digital service, from registration to tax payment, reaches only part of the population.
