In plain words
31.2% of population
What it is. This measure counts individuals who use the internet and expresses them as a share of the whole population, children and older people included. That makes it a broad gauge of how far online access has spread across society. It leaves out connection speed, the cost of data and how often people go online.
Higher is better. More people online means wider access to information, services and markets, so a higher share is better. The latest figure, for 2024, is 31.2% of population, up from 28.4% of population a year earlier, a gain of 2.7 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has climbed from a low of 10% of population in 2015 to its highest point in that span, reached in the latest year.
Why it matters. At 31.2% of population, most Tanzanians are still offline, so online banking, e-government services and digital schooling reach a minority of households. Firms selling or advertising online address a customer base that is growing but still limited. The state can expect each further year of gains to widen the audience for digital public services.
