What it is. This measure counts the share of people in Zambia who have used the internet, on any device and from any place. It is built by dividing the number of users by the total population, so a person who goes online occasionally counts the same as a daily user. It says nothing about connection speed, data costs or what people do online.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because each additional person online can reach information, services and markets that are otherwise out of reach. The latest figure is 17.1% of population in 2024, up from 16.5% of population a year earlier, a gain of 0.65 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has ranged from a low of 8.8% of population in 2015 to the current 17.1% of population, so 2024 is the highest point in that span.
Why it matters. With 17.1% of population online, most Zambians still deal with banks, public offices and schools in person or by phone call. Firms that sell or advertise online can reach only a small part of the market. Government plans for digital services will serve a minority of citizens until that share grows further.
