In plain words
23 companies
What it is. This is a headcount of domestic companies with shares listed on the country's stock exchanges at the end of each year. Every company counts as one, so a small firm and a large bank carry the same weight. The count says nothing about how much those companies are worth or how often their shares trade.
Higher is better. A higher count is better because it gives investors a wider choice of local shares and gives firms more ways to raise money by selling equity. The latest figure, for January 2025, is 23 companies, the same as a year earlier. Since 2000 the count has ranged from a low of 16 companies in 2000 to a high of 26 companies in 2018. The current level sits closer to that 2018 high than to the starting low.
Why it matters. A Botswana household or pension saver who wants to own local shares chooses from 23 companies. A firm considering a listing joins a small market, and the count has stayed flat over the last year.
