In plain words
12 companies
What it is. This is a year-end count of domestic companies listed on Namibia's stock exchanges. Each company counts once, so a small firm and a large one carry the same weight. The count changes when companies list, delist or merge, and it says nothing about what those companies are worth or how often their shares trade.
Higher is better. More listed companies give investors a wider choice of local shares and give firms more routes to raise money from the public, which is why a higher count is better. The latest figure is 12 companies in January 2024, down from 13 a year earlier, a fall of 7.7%. Since 2015 the count has ranged from 8 companies in 2015 to 14 in 2021, so the latest figure sits nearer the top of that range than the bottom.
Why it matters. With 12 companies listed, Namibian households and pension savers have a short list of local shares to choose from, and one delisting changes that list noticeably. Firms weighing a listing see a small market, which affects how easily they can raise capital at home. The loss of one company in a year reduces the range of local businesses open to public ownership.
