In plain words
5 companies
What it is. This measure counts the domestic companies whose shares are listed on Rwanda's stock exchanges at year end. Each company counts once, so a small issuer and a large one add the same amount. The count says nothing about market value, how often shares change hands or how much money listings have raised.
Higher is better. A higher count means more firms have opened their ownership to public investors, which gives savers more to choose from and gives companies another route to raise equity. The latest figure is 5 companies in January 2025, the same as a year earlier. Since 2018 the count has ranged from 4 companies in January 2018 to a high of 5 companies in January 2020. The latest figure therefore sits at the top of that range.
Why it matters. A household in Rwanda that wants to own local shares can choose among five listed companies. A firm looking for outside capital has few listed examples to follow and is likely to lean on other funding. The count has held at five for a year, so any widening of the market would show up first as a sixth listing.
