In plain words

75 companies

What it is. This measure counts domestic companies whose shares are listed on the country's stock exchanges at year end. It shows how many firms have chosen to raise capital or offer ownership to the public in Tunisia. The count says nothing about the size of each company, how often its shares trade or how much money is raised, so one large listing and one small listing weigh the same.

Higher is better. A higher count is better because more listed firms give savers more places to invest, give companies more routes to funding beyond bank loans, and make prices more representative of the economy. The latest figure is 75 companies, up from 74 a year earlier, a rise of 1.4%. Since 2016 the count has ranged from 74 companies in January 2024 to 82 companies in January 2018, so the latest reading sits just above the bottom of that range.

Why it matters. With 75 listed companies, Tunisian savers and investors choose from a narrow set of domestic shares, and firms that want to grow mostly rely on bank credit. The state has fewer listed firms through which to deepen the capital market. The small rise in 2025 is the first sign of the count turning up after it reached its lowest point of the period.
