In plain words

15 companies

What it is. This counts domestic companies whose shares are listed on the country's stock exchanges at year end. It is a simple headcount, so a small firm and a large one each add one, and it says nothing about market value, how often shares trade or how many investors take part. Delistings and new listings both move it, which makes a small market like Seychelles sensitive to a handful of decisions.

Higher is better. More listed companies give savers a wider choice of local shares and give firms more ways to raise money from the public, so a higher count is better. The latest figure is 15 companies in January 2025, down from 23 companies a year earlier, a fall of 34.8%. Since 2016 the count has ranged from a low of 8 companies in January 2016 to a high of 47 companies in January 2021. The current level sits nearer the bottom of that range than the top.

Why it matters. With 15 companies listed, Seychellois investors have a narrow set of local shares to choose from, and a few names carry much of the market. Firms weighing public equity find a thinner exchange than in January 2021, when 47 companies were listed. The next January count will show whether the fall since January 2024 has stopped.
