In plain words
92 companies
What it is. This counts the domestic companies listed on Mauritius's stock exchanges at year end. Each company adds one to the total, whatever its size, so a small issuer weighs the same as a large one. The count says nothing about how much those companies are worth or how often their shares change hands. Foreign companies are outside the count.
Higher is better. More listed companies give investors a wider choice of domestic shares and give firms more room to raise money from the public, which is why a higher count is better. The latest figure is 92 companies in January 2025, one fewer than the 93 companies a year earlier, a fall of 1.1%. Since 2016 the count has ranged from a low of 74 companies in 2017 to a high of 99 companies in 2018. At 92 companies, Mauritius sits in the upper part of that range.
Why it matters. For Mauritian savers, 92 companies is the pool of domestic shares they can buy through the exchanges. For firms, a listing is one way to raise funds from investors beyond bank borrowing. The count is close to its 2018 peak of 99 companies, so the choice on offer is broad by the country's own recent standards.
