In plain words
244 companies
What it is. This is a year-end headcount of domestic companies with shares listed on Egypt's stock exchanges. Every company counts once, whether it is a large bank or a small manufacturer. The total rises with new listings and falls when firms delist, merge or are bought out. It says nothing about company size or how often shares trade.
Higher is better. A higher count is better because it gives savers more domestic businesses to invest in and gives more firms a route to raise money from shareholders. The latest figure, for January 2025, is 244 companies, down from 246 companies a year earlier, a fall of 0.81%. Since 2016 the count has ranged from 239 companies in January 2022 to 252 companies in January 2017. The current level sits closer to the bottom of that range than the top.
Why it matters. With 244 companies listed, Egyptian investors choose from a limited set of domestic shares, and firms weighing equity against bank borrowing have a market of that size to approach. A count that stays near its low for the period suggests that listings are barely replacing exits. The next year-end figure will show whether the number is steadying or still slipping.
