In plain words

59 companies

What it is. This measure counts the domestic companies listed on Kenya's stock exchanges at year end. Each company counts once, so a small firm weighs the same as a large bank. The count rises with new listings and falls with delistings, takeovers and mergers. It leaves out company size and how actively shares trade.

Higher is better. A higher count is better because it gives investors a wider choice of shares and gives more firms a route to raise money from the public. In January 2025 Kenya had 59 companies listed, unchanged from a year earlier. Since 2015 the range has run from a low of 59 companies in January 2019 to a high of 65 companies in January 2016. The latest figure sits at the bottom of that range.

Why it matters. Kenyan savers who want to buy shares in local firms can choose from 59 companies, compared with 65 companies in January 2016. Firms weighing a listing find a market with no growth in the number of names over the last year. The state, which relies on deeper capital markets to channel investment, can check the next year-end count to see whether it moves off this low.
