In plain words

78 companies

What it is. This measure counts domestic companies with shares listed on the country's stock exchanges at year end. It is a simple headcount, so a small firm and a large one weigh the same. It says nothing about how much those companies are worth, how often their shares trade, or how much money they raise. Foreign companies are outside the count, and so are firms that stay privately held.

Higher is better. A larger number of listed companies means more firms can raise money from public investors and more choice for savers who want to own shares. The latest figure is 78 companies in January 2025, up from 76 a year earlier, a rise of 2.6%. That is the highest count since 2016, level with the top of the range over that span. The lowest was 73 companies in January 2017, so the count has moved within a narrow band of five companies.

Why it matters. With 78 companies, the Moroccan market offers a fairly small set of shares for households who want to invest outside property or bank deposits. For firms, a listing is an option that only a few take up, so most still depend on bank credit or private owners for funding. The state has an interest in the number rising, because a wider market gives more routes for privatisation and for mobilising local savings.
