In plain words
9.5% of GDP
What it is. Manufacturing value added is the value factories create after subtracting the materials and services they buy in, shown as a share of the whole economy's output. It covers activities that transform goods, such as food processing, building materials, chemicals and metals. Oil and gas extraction is counted elsewhere, so the share tracks how much of Algeria's output comes from making things rather than pumping hydrocarbons.
Higher is better. A larger manufacturing share means the economy is producing more of its own goods and depends less on a single export sector, so higher is better. The latest figure is 9.5% of GDP for 2024, up from 9.1% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 0.33 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has ranged from a low of 6.3% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 10.2% of GDP in 2022. The 2024 reading sits in the upper part of that range, a little below the 2022 peak.
Why it matters. A manufacturing share near a tenth of output means most of what Algerian households and firms consume is either imported or comes from the hydrocarbon economy. Factories that supply local demand can create jobs and reduce the import bill, which matters for a state whose budget follows energy prices. The recovery from the 2020 low suggests industry has regained ground, though the 2022 level has not yet been matched.
