In plain words
5.7% of GDP
What it is. Manufacturing value added is the value factories create, meaning their sales minus what they pay other firms for materials and services, expressed as a share of the whole economy's output. Because it counts only the value added at the factory stage, it shows how much of national income comes from making things rather than from the cost of inputs. Mining, farming, construction and services sit outside it.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because it means more of the economy's output comes from making goods, which tends to support steadier jobs and a wider range of activity. The latest figure for 2025 is 5.7% of GDP, up from 5.6% a year earlier, a rise of 0.11 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 5.2% of GDP in 2021 to a high of 6.5% of GDP in 2016. The 2025 reading sits above that low and below the 2016 high.
Why it matters. At 5.7% of GDP, manufacturing is a small part of Botswana's economy, so factory work employs only a limited share of workers and many finished goods are likely to be imported. A share that stays near this level leaves household incomes and public revenue dependent on other sectors. A move back towards the 2016 level of 6.5% of GDP would give firms and the state a broader base to draw on.
