In plain words
13.1% of GDP
What it is. Manufacturing value added is the value factories and processing firms add to their inputs, counted as a share of everything the economy produces. It covers activities such as food and beverage processing, textiles and building materials, and takes output net of the raw materials and services bought in. Informal workshops and household production are often only partly captured in national accounts, so the share can understate small-scale making.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the country's income comes from turning raw materials into goods, which tends to bring steadier jobs and less reliance on selling unprocessed crops. The latest figure, for 2025, is 13.1% of GDP, up from 12.3% a year earlier, a rise of 0.84 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 10.8% of GDP in 2021 to a high of 13.3% of GDP in 2018. The current reading therefore sits close to the top of that range and well above the 2021 trough.
Why it matters. A manufacturing share of 13.1% of GDP means processing and light industry carry a meaningful part of Burundi's output, in a economy where farming remains the main source of livelihood. For households, a larger factory sector can mean more wage work and more locally made goods on the shelves. For the state, it widens the base for taxes and reduces some pressure on imports, which matters when foreign currency is scarce.
