In plain words
18% of GDP
What it is. Manufacturing value added is the output of the country's manufacturers minus the cost of the materials and services they buy in, shown as a share of total GDP. It counts the new value that factories and workshops create, so imported inputs do not inflate it. Because it is a share, it can move when other sectors grow or shrink, even if factory output stays the same. Output in the informal economy is often only partly captured.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because it points to more local processing of raw materials, more varied jobs and a broader base for growth. The latest figure, for 2023, is 18% of GDP, down from 18.3% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.39 percentage points. Since 2014 the share has ranged from a low of 17.4% of GDP in 2014 to a high of 19.7% of GDP in 2015. The 2023 reading sits in the lower part of that range, nearer the 2014 low than the 2015 peak.
Why it matters. At 18% of GDP, manufacturing supplies a substantial part of the country's income, and with it wages and locally made goods for households. The small slip over the last year gives firms and the state little added momentum from this sector. Tax receipts and job prospects will depend on whether the share moves back towards the 2015 level of 19.7% of GDP.
