In plain words
6.3% of GDP
What it is. Manufacturing value added is the value factories create in a year, meaning the sales of what they make minus the cost of the materials and services they buy in. It is shown as a share of GDP, so it tracks how large the factory sector is relative to the whole economy. Output from farming, mining and services sits outside it, and so does any production that happens outside the manufacturing classification.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the country's income comes from making and processing goods at home, which usually brings steadier work and more skills. Chad's latest figure for 2024 is 6.3% of GDP, down from 6.4% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.11 percentage points. That is the lowest level since 2015. The highest in that span was 10.1% of GDP in 2017, so the share now sits well below its peak.
Why it matters. At 6.3% of GDP, factories account for a small part of Chad's economy, and other sectors carry most of its output and jobs. A larger manufacturing base would let more raw materials be processed locally and could reduce reliance on imported goods. The drop from the 2017 level suggests the sector has lost ground in the economy over the period.
