In plain words
16.8% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the value of goods and services that residents sell to the rest of the world and divides it by the size of the whole economy. It rises when export prices or volumes grow faster than GDP and falls when the economy grows faster than its sales abroad. Income earned on investments abroad and transfers sit outside it.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the economy earns money from foreign buyers, which brings in foreign currency to pay for imports. The latest figure is 16.8% of GDP for 2025, down from 19.9% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 3 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 15.5% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 30.8% of GDP in 2022. The 2025 reading therefore sits close to the bottom of that range and far below the 2022 peak.
Why it matters. At 16.8% of GDP, the economy earns less foreign currency per dinar of output than a year earlier, when the share was 19.9% of GDP. That limits how much households and firms can comfortably spend on imported food, machinery and medicines. The state also has fewer foreign earnings to draw on for public spending.
