In plain words
9.3% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the value of goods and services that residents of Comoros sell to buyers abroad and divides it by the size of the economy. Services count alongside physical goods, so travel and transport sold to foreign customers are included. Remittances from relatives overseas and aid receipts are transfers rather than sales, so they are left out. A higher share means a larger part of national income is earned from foreign customers.
Higher is better. A higher share is good because export earnings bring in foreign currency to pay for imports and give local producers a bigger market. The latest figure is 9.3% of GDP for 2025, up from 9.2% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 0.07 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 5.7% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 12.9% of GDP in 2022. The current level sits roughly midway between the two.
Why it matters. At 9.3% of GDP, foreign sales contribute a smaller part of national income than in 2022, when the share reached 12.9% of GDP. A smaller export share leaves households and firms more exposed to the price of imported goods and to the supply of foreign currency. For the state, a larger export share would widen the base for trade-related revenue, and the next annual reading will show whether the small gain in 2025 continues.
