In plain words
110.5% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the value of goods and services that residents sell to buyers abroad and divides it by the size of the economy. For Djibouti the services side includes shipping, port handling and transit. Exports are counted at their full sales value while GDP counts value added, so the share can exceed the size of the whole economy. The figure covers the gross value of sales, including any imported content, and leaves out how much profit stays in the country.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the economy earns from foreign customers, which brings in foreign currency and supports jobs tied to trade. The latest figure, for 2025, is 110.5% of GDP, down from 126.4% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 15.9 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from 103.8% of GDP in 2016 to 166.7% of GDP in 2019. The 2025 reading sits close to the bottom of that range and well below the 2019 peak.
Why it matters. Exports worth more than the entire economy mean port, shipping and transit earnings carry much of Djibouti's income, employment and state revenue. The move to 110.5% of GDP from 126.4% of GDP a year earlier makes those foreign earnings a smaller part of the economy. Households and firms linked to the port and logistics chain are the most exposed to that change, as is the government's access to foreign currency.
