In plain words

42% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the value of goods sold abroad and services supplied to foreign buyers, such as transport and travel, and divides the total by gross domestic product. The sums are gross, so the value of imported inputs sits inside the export figure. The ratio shows how much of the economy depends on foreign demand. It says nothing about how much of that income stays in the country after imports are paid for.

Higher is better. A higher share means foreign customers pay for more of what the economy produces, which brings in foreign currency and widens the base for jobs and tax revenue. The latest figure is 42% of GDP for 2025, down from 42.7% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.7 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 23.8% of GDP in 2021 to a high of 46.7% of GDP in 2019. The current level therefore sits in the upper part of that range, a little below the 2019 peak and well above the 2021 trough.

Why it matters. At 42% of GDP, overseas buyers account for a large part of national output, so household incomes, business takings and public revenue in Cabo Verde follow foreign demand closely. The 2021 low of 23.8% of GDP shows how far the ratio can drop when that demand weakens. The small slip since 2024 is the next figure to check against the 2019 high of 46.7% of GDP.
