In plain words
23% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the value of goods sold abroad and services supplied to buyers outside the country, then divides the total by GDP. It shows how much of a country's output is sold to foreign customers. Imports are left out, so it is a gross figure and says nothing about the trade balance. In an economy that depends on a few commodities, the share rises and falls with world prices as well as with volumes shipped.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the economy's output earns foreign currency and meets demand from outside the country, which makes growth less dependent on domestic spending. Angola's latest figure is 23% of GDP for 2025, down from 30.9% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 7.9 percentage points. That is the lowest reading since 2016, the start of the window. The high over the same span was 40.1% of GDP in 2021, so the share now sits well below the top of its range.
Why it matters. A smaller export share means less foreign currency coming in relative to the size of the economy. Firms that buy imported inputs and machinery may find dollars harder to obtain. The state, which relies heavily on export earnings for revenue, has less room to spend and service its external debts. Households can feel this through the price of imported food and goods if the currency weakens.
