In plain words
43.4% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the value of goods and services sold to buyers abroad and divides it by the value of everything the country produces in a year. Because GDP is the denominator, the ratio moves with export prices and volumes as well as with the size of the wider economy. It covers sales only, so it leaves out what the country imports and how much of the export income stays at home.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the economy earns income from foreign buyers, which brings in foreign currency and widens the base for growth. The latest figure is 43.4% of GDP for 2025, down from 45.7% a year earlier, a fall of 2.3 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 28.5% of GDP in 2019 to a high of 45.7% of GDP in 2024. The 2025 reading therefore sits close to the top of that range, just below the peak set in 2024.
Why it matters. With more than two fifths of national output matched by sales abroad, DR Congo's incomes depend heavily on what foreign buyers pay and how much they buy. Changes in export earnings can reach households and firms through jobs, the exchange rate and the prices of imported goods. They also affect the state, which relies on export activity for part of its tax and foreign currency receipts.
