In plain words
29.8% of GDP
What it is. This measure takes the value of goods and services that residents sell to the rest of the world and divides it by gross domestic product. Goods such as farm produce and minerals sit alongside services such as transport and tourism spending by visitors. Imports are left out, so the figure shows how much of the economy's output is sold abroad and says nothing about the trade balance. A change in prices or in the exchange rate can move the share even when volumes stay level.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the economy earns from foreign buyers, which brings in foreign currency and reduces reliance on home demand alone. The latest figure is 29.8% of GDP for 2025, up from 26% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 3.8 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 21% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 29.8% of GDP in 2025. The latest reading therefore sits at the top of its range for the period.
Why it matters. At close to 30 per cent of output, foreign sales support a large part of income in Côte d'Ivoire, from farm households to traders, ports and transport firms. Businesses that sell abroad earn foreign currency, which helps pay for imported inputs and machinery. The state gains from export taxes and from foreign exchange that eases the cost of servicing external debt. A share this high also ties incomes more closely to foreign demand and world prices.
