In plain words
55.5% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the value of everything Gabon sells to the rest of the world, goods and services alike, and divides it by the size of the economy (GDP). It shows how much of national output depends on foreign buyers. The ratio moves when export values change and also when GDP itself changes, so a fall can come from weaker sales abroad or from a larger economy. It counts sales, so it says nothing about how much of the revenue stays in the country.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of what the economy produces finds foreign buyers, which brings in foreign currency and widens the base of demand. The latest figure, for 2025, is 55.5% of GDP, down from 64.6% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 9.1 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 44% of GDP in 2016 to a high of 67.6% of GDP in 2022. The 2025 reading sits well above that low and below the 2022 peak.
Why it matters. At 55.5% of GDP, more than half of Gabon's economic output is tied to foreign demand, so changes in export earnings reach household incomes and firm revenues quickly. A drop of this size cuts the foreign currency coming in and can narrow the state's revenue from export sectors such as oil and minerals. The next annual reading will show whether the share recovers towards its 2022 level or keeps falling.
