In plain words
71.7% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up what Libya sells to the rest of the world, in goods and in services, and divides it by the size of the whole economy. For Libya the total is dominated by crude oil and gas, so the ratio follows oil output and prices closely. It counts the value of sales abroad and leaves out imports, so it says nothing about what the country spends overseas or how much of the income stays in the economy.
Higher is better. A higher share means more of the economy earns income from foreign buyers, which brings in foreign currency to pay for imports. The latest figure, for 2025, is 71.7% of GDP, unchanged from 71.7% of GDP a year earlier, with a movement of only 0.02 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 14.6% of GDP in 2016 to a high of 92.1% of GDP in 2021. The current level sits much nearer the top of that range than the bottom.
Why it matters. At 71.7% of GDP, a very large part of Libya's income depends on selling a narrow set of products abroad. Households rely on that income because it pays for imported food and goods, and the state relies on it to fund its budget. A fall in oil output or prices would cut into all of these at once, as the gap between the 2016 low and the 2021 high shows.
