In plain words

65% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up what Mauritian residents sell abroad, covering goods shipped and services such as tourism, financial and business services, and divides the total by GDP. Spending by foreign visitors on the island counts as an export of services. Goods made with imported inputs count at their full sales value, so the share is a gross measure and leaves out the profit earned on those sales.

Higher is better. A higher share means more of the economy earns income from foreign demand, which brings in foreign currency and gives firms a market far larger than the island offers at home. The latest figure is 65% of GDP for 2025, down 2.1 percentage points from 67.1% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 55.4% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 69% of GDP in 2023. The 2025 figure sits closer to the top of that range than the bottom.

Why it matters. With 65% of GDP coming from sales abroad, many Mauritian jobs and company revenues depend on tourists and overseas clients. Those earnings also help pay for imported fuel and food. The fall from 67.1% of GDP shows how quickly that income can shift with foreign demand, and the next annual reading will show whether the share keeps falling towards its 2020 low of 55.4% of GDP.
