In plain words
32.5% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the value of everything Senegal sells to the rest of the world, including goods and services such as transport and tourism, and divides it by GDP. Exports are counted at their full sales value, so imported inputs used to make them are included. Income earned abroad, such as profits and wages, and transfers such as remittances sit outside it.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because more of the economy earns foreign currency by selling abroad, which helps pay for imports and reduces the need to borrow. The latest figure is 32.5% of GDP for 2025, up from 25.5% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 7 percentage points. Since 2016 the low was 20.7% of GDP in 2020, and the high is the current 32.5% of GDP. The latest reading therefore sits at the top of its range for the period.
Why it matters. At about a third of GDP, foreign sales carry a large part of Senegal's income. That gives the country more foreign currency to pay for imported fuel, food and equipment, and gives exporting firms a larger market than the home economy alone. The next annual reading will show whether the 2025 level holds.
