In plain words

79.6% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the value of everything Seychelles sells to the rest of the world, goods and services together, and divides it by the size of the economy. In an island economy, services such as tourism spending by visitors and fish processing for foreign markets make up most of that total. Imports are excluded, so the figure shows how much of national output is sold abroad, not what is earned after paying for foreign inputs.

Higher is better. A higher share means more of the economy's income comes from foreign buyers, which brings in foreign currency and widens the market beyond a small domestic population. The latest figure, 79.6% of GDP for 2025, is down from 80.6% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.96 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 66.5% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 93.9% of GDP in 2017. The current reading therefore sits in the upper half of that range, well above the 2020 trough and some distance below the 2017 peak.

Why it matters. At close to 80% of GDP, Seychelles earns most of its income from sales abroad, so household jobs and wages depend heavily on visitor numbers and on fish and related exports. Firms in hotels, transport and fishing feel shifts in foreign demand quickly. The government relies on this foreign income to pay for the imported food, fuel and goods the islands need, and the 2020 low of 66.5% of GDP shows how far the share can drop when travel stops.
