In plain words

26.5% of seats

What it is. This measure counts the seats held by women in the national parliament and divides them by all seats in the chamber. For countries with two houses it covers the lower house, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union collects the figures, which reach the World Bank series. It records who holds a seat on the date of the count. Cabinet posts, local councils and the influence of individual members sit outside it.

Higher is better. A higher share means women hold more of the seats where laws and budgets are decided, so the chamber looks more like the population it serves. In Seychelles the latest figure is 26.5% of seats in January 2025, up from 20.6% a year earlier, a rise of 5.9 percentage points. Since 2016 the lowest point was 20.6% of seats in January 2024. The highest is the current 26.5% of seats, so the latest reading is the top of its range for the period.

Why it matters. Women now hold about a quarter of the seats in Seychelles, so they have a larger voice in debates on budgets, family law and public services than a year earlier. The next count shows whether the January 2025 level holds, since it follows a year in which the share was at its lowest for the period.
