In plain words

$0.48bn

What it is. This measure counts the money foreign investors put into businesses in Benin, net of what they withdraw. It covers equity purchases, profits reinvested locally and loans between a foreign parent and its Benin subsidiary, where the investor takes a lasting stake in the firm. Short-term share and bond trading is left out. Figures are in current US dollars, so they carry price changes, and a single large project can move one year's total.

Higher is better. Higher is better because more foreign capital pays for plants, equipment and jobs, and it often brings new technology and export contacts. The latest figure, for 2025, is $0.48bn, up 21.5% from $0.4bn a year earlier, a rise of $0.09bn. That is the highest reading since 2016, and the lowest in that span was $0.13bn, recorded in 2016.

Why it matters. For Benin, $0.48bn of net foreign investment adds funding for factories, logistics and processing businesses that create work for households. Firms gain capital they would otherwise have to borrow locally, and the state gains a wider base of activity to tax. The next annual reading will show whether this higher level holds.
