What it is. FDI inflows count the money foreign owners put into businesses in Chad, net of what they take out. The total combines equity investment and loans from a foreign parent to its local branch, minus withdrawals and repayments. Withdrawals are subtracted, so the figure can fall below zero, and one large deal or exit can swing a small economy's total sharply. Foreign portfolio investment in shares and bonds, and aid, sit outside the measure.
Higher is better. Higher is better because a larger net inflow means more foreign capital paying for equipment, buildings and operations inside the country. The figure for 2025 is $0bn, level with $0bn in 2024 at this precision, though the underlying change is 53.2% from a very small base. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of −$1.6bn in 2022 to a high of $0.44bn in 2023. The latest reading sits well above that 2022 low and below the 2023 peak.
Why it matters. A net inflow close to zero means foreign investors are adding almost no new capital to Chad, so little outside money is reaching new projects, jobs or the tax revenue they generate. The 2022 reading of −$1.6bn shows how foreign owners pulling money out can turn the total sharply negative. Households and the state depend on domestic savings, aid and oil revenue to fund investment while the 2025 level stays near $0bn.
