In plain words

$0.31bn

What it is. This measure counts the money foreign investors put into businesses in Burkina Faso, through equity, reinvested profits and loans from parent companies, after subtracting what they take out. Because withdrawals and loan repayments are netted off, the figure can fall below zero in a year when investors pull out more than they bring in. Portfolio investment in shares and bonds, aid and remittances sit outside it, as does investment by Burkinabè firms and the state.

Higher is better. Higher is better because a larger inflow means more foreign money is paying for mines, plants, equipment and jobs. The latest figure for 2025 is $0.31bn, up by $0.51bn from a net outflow of $0.2bn in 2024. Since 2016 the range runs from that 2024 low to a high of $0.67bn in 2022, so the current level sits in the lower middle of its range and well short of the 2022 peak.

Why it matters. A return to positive inflows means foreign investors added to their stake in the country in 2025 after pulling money out in 2024. For firms, especially in capital-hungry sectors such as mining, that means more funding for equipment and operations. For the state, it brings in foreign currency and some tax revenue, though at $0.31bn the flow is still well below the $0.67bn reached in 2022.
