In plain words

$0.04bn

What it is. This measure counts the money foreign investors put into businesses in Burundi, after subtracting what they withdraw. It covers buying a lasting stake in a local company, profits that foreign owners leave in the country to reinvest, and loans between a foreign parent and its local branch. It is stated in current US dollars, so price changes are not stripped out. Purchases of shares on the stock market and aid grants are left out.

Higher is better. Higher is better because more foreign investment brings money for factories, farms, equipment and know-how, along with foreign currency. The latest figure, for 2025, is $0.04bn, up from $0.03bn a year earlier, a rise of 5.4%. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of $0bn in 2016 to a high of $0.07bn in 2017. The 2025 inflow sits between those two ends, closer to the high than to the low.

Why it matters. At $0.04bn a year, foreign investment adds only a small amount to Burundi's economy. Few foreign-funded projects can start, so the number of new jobs and the supply of foreign currency to firms and the state stay modest. The 2017 peak of $0.07bn is the level against which a stronger year can be checked.
