In plain words

$0.15bn

What it is. This measure counts the new money foreign owners put into businesses in Djibouti, after subtracting what they withdraw. It adds up share purchases, profits that foreign firms reinvest locally and loans between a foreign parent and its Djibouti affiliate. Portfolio investment, aid and ordinary bank lending sit outside it. Djibouti's economy is small, so a handful of large projects can move the annual total sharply.

Higher is better. Higher is better because more foreign direct investment brings in capital, equipment and management know-how that the country would otherwise have to fund or borrow for itself. The latest figure, for 2025, is $0.15bn, up from $0.07bn a year earlier, a rise of 119.8%. Since 2016 the lowest reading was $0.07bn in 2024 and the highest was $0.19bn in 2022. The 2025 figure therefore sits much nearer the top of that range than the bottom, and it has recovered most of the ground lost after the 2022 peak.

Why it matters. Djibouti's economy is built around its port and logistics services, and foreign investment is a main source of money for terminals, transport links and related businesses. A doubling of inflows in a year can mean more construction work and more jobs around those assets. For the state, each dollar of private foreign capital reduces the amount it has to raise through public borrowing. The 2022 high of $0.19bn is the level to watch for whether the recovery continues.
